James Guild

Biography

James Guild (1811-1887)

James Guild was born on 12 July 1811 in Roxbury, Massachusetts to Sarah Mears and Samuel Guild. He had nine siblings: Mary, Samuel, Louisa, Sarah Ann, George, Harriet, Henry, Frederick, and Frances.

James was educated at the “Free School at Roxburie.” In 1838 he was made the second lieutenant and commander of the corps of the Norfolk Guards. James was also an avid supporter of the Unitarian Society.

On 15 September 1842, he married Sophia B. Child, who was described as “a lady of uncommon amiability and loveliness of character” (Burleigh, pg. 173). Unfortunately, she died on 2 December 1857.

James remarried two years later, on 1 June 1859, to Annie E. Gore. In the 1860 census, they are found living in Roxbury, Massachusetts with five servants ranging in age from 18-24. At this time, James is listed as a merchant. Regrettably, Annie died due to a disease of the uterus and ovaries on 4 June 1868.

After Annie’s death, James commissioned the publishing of a memorial book in her honour. It is filled of comments about her life and pages from her diaries. UPEI is privileged to have a copy of this book in our Provenance Collection. The book, titled A. E. G., includes an inscription written by James: “Robert C. Billings Esq. With the kind regards of James Guild Jan. 1. 1869.”

James remarried for a third time to Caroline Snowden Whitmarsh. They were married on 2 September 1870 and remained married until James’ death in 1898.

Although he married three times, James had no children.

During his life, James was a leather merchant. He, and his older brother, Samuel, took over the family business of fur trading after their father passed away. They continued for several years until Samuel’s death when James was forced to give the business up to his younger brother, Frederick.

On a passport application in 1856, James was described as being 5’9” with a high forehead, grey eyes, a prominent nose, with a medium chin, light hair, and a fair complexion.

In the 1880 census, James and his wife, Caroline, are living in Boston with his niece and great-nephew.

For many years James Guild was a director and at one point the president of the People’s National Bank of Roxbury. He was also president of the Roxbury Gas Light Co.

James died on 3 May 1887 of pleurisy-bronchitis and an enlarged prostate. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery and Crematory in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
