Effie S. Whidden

Biography

Effie S. Whidden (1873-1935)

Effie Sarah Whidden was born 28 November 1873 in Sainte Flavie, Quebec to Edward Whidden and Mary Ellen Harvey. Edward Whidden was an “underground foreman” at the Oldham Sterling Gold Company, Ltd.

Effie had, seven siblings: John Harvey, Willis Arthur, Ethel Georgina, Creighton Percy, Roy Sibley, Nelson Harris, and Earl Lester. She was the only sibling to be born in Quebec, the rest were born in Nova Scotia.

In 1889, she attended the Provincial Normal School in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Provincial Normal School was established in 1850 for the training of teachers. In 1961, the same school evolved into the Nova Scotia Teachers College. Effie graduated from the Provincial Normal School in 1890. She was awarded a second class diploma.

Inside UPEI’s Provenance Collection book, Swinton’s Outlines of the World’s History by William Swinton, Effie has written the names of three of her classmates: Miss Beharrel, Miss Farrell, and Miss Annie Bigney. Effie dated her signature 9 November 1889.

Mary M. Beharrell received a first class diploma from the Provincial Normal School in 1890; the same year as Effie, Annie and Teresa. Her place of residence at the time was Amherst, Nova Scotia. Teresa Farrell received a first class diploma from the Provincial Normal School. Miss Farrell was living in Wolfville at the time of graduation. Census records indicate she was originally from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and was born 25 August 1868. Annie M. Bigney received a second class diploma from the Provincial Normal School in 1900. She was residing in North River, Colchester County, Nova Scotia at the time of her graduation. Bigney was originally from Margate, Prince Edward Island and was born 19 August 1872. She was born to John G. and Catherine E. Bigney. She had four siblings, Laura, Arthur, Ada, and Ella. Annie married John Webb on 24 June 1903.

On the back of an inserted map between pages eight and nine, Effie wrote that Mary, Teresa, and herself had a picnic on 23 June 1890.

On 30 September 1896, Effie married Frank Henry Reeves in Oldham, Nova Scotia. They had been neighbours, according to the 1891 census, and both of their fathers were gold miners in Oldham.

Together Effie and Frank had, at least, four children: Helen Merle (February 1902), Ethel Bernice (May 1904), Nina Claire (August 1910), and Roy Errol (October 1914).

Effie died 12 March 1935, in Oldham, Halifax County, Nova Scotia.
